Day 202: Learn when your body needs rest

Yesterday I ran myself ragged all day, literally. By the time I got home around 10:00 p.m., I was too tired to even sit on the couch and crash with some T.V. shows I had tapped on the DVR box.

When I finally was able to peel myself off the couch, it was midnight and I was dead tired. There was no energy left in me to even attempt creating a card.

Apparently my body was telling me that I need to slow down and rest before I tackle anything that could drain what little energy I had left. So the new plan is to listen to my body more and get as much rest as I can, when I can get it. I just don’t like missing a day to create and post a card. 😦

Obviously, I didn’t have any energy left to give. Sorry no card yesterday.

Anyhow, I am still very tired but I did manage to create a card for yesterday and today. Yeah!! 🙂

Yesterday’s card is inspired by my friend Justin’s dress shirt and tie. We were at a meeting this evening, and Justin had on this electric, bright blue shirt with a stripped tie filled with green, yellow, white, pink, orange, and navy blue. As I was sitting through the meeting, I couldn’t stop staring at his shirt because the color caught my attention. I was distracted by the color, not Justin.

As for today’s card, it’s inspired by an outfit and packaging. The outfit consisted of a Chevron coral clutch purse with a sea foam green bow, a coral blouse, and a sea foam green blazer and accessories. The packaging aspect came from an episode of watching Buddy’s Bakery Rescue staring Buddy Valastro from the hit show, Cake Boss. Anyhow, during the episode, Buddy was trying to help two sisters, owners, of an artisan bakery reach that level to draw business back into the bakery. In the makeover of both the store and products, Buddy showed the owners how to package some of their products in mason jars tied with tags. I liked the idea of the tags from the show, I incorporated the image into today’s design.

So, here are the two designs.

Day 174: I want to be a part of it New York, New York

I’m an LA baby, but I think I should have been raised in New York.

My dad and grandfather were originally from New York. My grandfather grew up in Brooklyn, and my dad was raised in the South Bronx. So technically I have New York blood running through my veins, but I know it’s just not the same.

But if ever met me in person, you would definitely mistake me for a New Yorker! I’m loud, outgoing, speak my mind, and love life.

I guess I got the best of both worlds, on opposites coasts!

Although I do love New York, my heart is still in LA.

Okay, let me tell you my inspiration for today’s card. I was watching The Next Great Baker (I’m a sucker for a good reality cooking/baking show because yes, I love to cook and bake. I’m a food junkie what can I say?) and the first episode had a new twist from previous seasons. The contestants, in pairs this year, had to travel to a New York destination and find inspiration for their cake challenge. The contestants went to cool places like Bryant Park, Harlem, Central Park, the Bronx, and even Washington Square. Then they had to come back to the bakery and design a cake based on their inspiration.

Now, I’m no professional baker, but some of the cakes had really great design work while others, let just say that they could use some practice and improve their decorating skills. However, each cake design brought out their own perspective on how the designers saw New York from their eyes.

So, today’s card is inspired by New York and is part of the city series I started way back when with Paris.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll have a different New York design, who knows?

Day 14: I think I watch too much T.V.

I’m by no means a couch potato, but I do have some favorite T.V. shows and Cake Boss on TLC is one of my favorite shows. Come on, I did meet, get my picture taken and an autograph of Buddy Valastro himself. So, I’m a fan of the show.

Anyhow, Buddy loves to challenge himself and his staff with these big, animated cakes for his clients. His motto is “go big or go home, Hoboken style,” and he’s pulled off some amazing cakes. But Buddy is an Italian baker that loves an old school decorating style that isn’t done often, piping. Basically, he takes a pastry bag filled with royal icing, sits down in front of the cake, gets in the “zone” and starts piping until a design forms. In art that’s called line art.

So after watching an episode where he pipes a lace pattern based off a bride’s wedding dress, I go the idea to try piping in my own way – with Illustrator.

Now I normally don’t create scroll designs in my work, so this was a new challenge for me. This whole process is experimental for me and learning how I can be a better designer.

I’m also hoping new clients will like my work so much that they either want to buy a design for me to print Thank you cards for them, or, they want to hire me for a design project (hint, hint – I’m available to take on new projects.).

Day 7: Found inspiration watching Bakery Boss

I’m a foodie. I love watching cooking and baking shows for recipe ideas of what to cook for myself. There are too many to name, but I’ve probably watched them all.

Anyway, one of my new favorite shows is Bakery Boss staring Buddy Valastro from TLC’s Cake Boss, actually I met him last year (and got his autograph!), where he helps a struggling bakery revamp their image and food.

The episode I was watching featured a business in upstate New York called “Baked Euphoria” that has a 1960’s vibe with lots of color and tie-dyed designs on their baked goods.

Taking a cue from the episode and famous artist Andy Warhol, gave me inspiration for today’s image.
