Day 223: Get back on the horse and just do it

I did not forgot to create a card yesterday.

I had plans all day and didn’t get home until eight o’clock at night. While I was getting settled, a friend texted me about going to see a movie, Step Up All In, and I decided to go because I had wanted to see it too.

Basically, it’s a continuation of the Step Up movie series where they brought back a lot of the characters from the previous movies. The acting was bad, the story line was predictable, the dancing could have used some improvement, but the finale dance was awesome. And…there were several dancers in the film from the show, So You Think You Can Dance.

I used to dance: hip hop, jazz, salsa, freestyle, swing, and modern dance styles. I am by far no professional dancer, nor do I claim to be. My creative side is more on the artistic fine art and design side, but I can dance. It’s just an area that I chose to pursue for my life. But pump up some really good music, and I just might start dancing for you.

Anyhow, let’s move onto the Thank You card instead.

Since I didn’t get a card designed yesterday, I have two to share with you today.

The first card is inspired by a cake I saw on an episode of The Next Great Baker, where two teams competing for a spot in the finale had to recreate a cake based on the one they did for their audition onto the show. I took the design from one of the cakes and transposed it into a card.

The second card is inspired by a dress and bracelet because I was drawn to the color palate. Something about the outfit done in black and tan caught my attention, and my eyes focused directly on a flower belt. So I recreated the look into a card.

Okay, here are the cards.

Day 59: Stop and look around you

The entire world can inspire you in ways you couldn’t even imagine. All you have to do is stop and look around you to find your muse.

Today’s muse comes from an iron headboard I saw posted on Pinterest.

I know what you’re thinking, “Really?!?! I headboard was your inspiration today?”

Well, yes. What’s wrong with that?

The headboard had this amazing scroll work that give it an Art Nouveau design. I just used that as my inspiration for today’s card.

Good Night.

Day 14: I think I watch too much T.V.

I’m by no means a couch potato, but I do have some favorite T.V. shows and Cake Boss on TLC is one of my favorite shows. Come on, I did meet, get my picture taken and an autograph of Buddy Valastro himself. So, I’m a fan of the show.

Anyhow, Buddy loves to challenge himself and his staff with these big, animated cakes for his clients. His motto is “go big or go home, Hoboken style,” and he’s pulled off some amazing cakes. But Buddy is an Italian baker that loves an old school decorating style that isn’t done often, piping. Basically, he takes a pastry bag filled with royal icing, sits down in front of the cake, gets in the “zone” and starts piping until a design forms. In art that’s called line art.

So after watching an episode where he pipes a lace pattern based off a bride’s wedding dress, I go the idea to try piping in my own way – with Illustrator.

Now I normally don’t create scroll designs in my work, so this was a new challenge for me. This whole process is experimental for me and learning how I can be a better designer.

I’m also hoping new clients will like my work so much that they either want to buy a design for me to print Thank you cards for them, or, they want to hire me for a design project (hint, hint – I’m available to take on new projects.).
